Hours Between Two Times

How long is it from one time to another? Breaks deducted, overnight shifts handled.

Enter a start and an end and this calculator returns the hours between two times, with any unpaid break taken off. The answer appears in hours and minutes and in decimal hours, because timesheets and payroll want different notations for the same duration.

Overnight spans are handled

If the end time is earlier than the start, the span is treated as crossing midnight rather than as an error, so 22:00 to 06:00 correctly returns eight hours. This is the case that trips up spreadsheet formulas most often.

From one span to a full week

For a single shift this calculator is enough. For a full week with daily totals and an overtime split, move to the time card calculator. For tracking as you go rather than after the fact, use the punch clock, and see how to calculate hours worked for the method by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Does it deduct lunch?
Only if you enter a break in minutes. Enter the unpaid portion; short paid rest breaks should not be deducted.
Why give the answer in decimal too?
Because payroll systems take decimal hours. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45, and the second form is the one that gets typed wrongly.
Can it handle times past midnight?
Yes — an end time earlier than the start is read as the following day, which is how night shifts are normally recorded.
